This is a simple but useful tool

 

It's just a semi-tranparent window that you put over the image on your media player, stretch it out to cover the image exactly, and it tells you the aspect.

If I had dragged the corner all the way, it would have told me that The Bridge at Remagen is 2.35:1. No more guessing!
